The Greyhounds defeated Castle in the 3A Girls Semi State Saturday at Evansville North. The game was tremendously affected by a weather front the produced 30 mph winds and rain.
Using a wind aided direct style of play, Castle out shot Carmel 10 to 4 in the first half. Goalkeeper Erin Baker was rock steady making seven saves as the defensive block worked to limit the Castle offense to long shots. The girls did a nice job of trying to play possession soccer but the wind and an aggressive Knights defense prevented any really dangerous Carmel shots.
The second half saw Carmel’s offense create many more attacking opportunities but the girls were unable to get a shot on goal. Finally in the 66th minute Castle cleared a corner kick the fell to left back Olivia Fray. Fray calmly chested the ball down and half volleyed a 30 yard shot back on goal. The shot beat the Castle keeper to her upper left corner of the net for the games only goal. Castle spent the next 14 minutes fighting the wind and a stout Carmel team defense but were not able to find a tying goal.
The offensive player of the game was Fray. She was also the co-defensive player of the game with Baker. Fray played as the left back, opposite of her normal right back position, to check Castle’s talented freshman right wing Emmy Higgins who lead her team in assists this season. Fray accomplished this with some help from her teammates. Baker had a season high 7 saves and recorded her 15th shutout.
The team record is now 18-0-3 (MIC 7-0-0). The next game is the 3A State Final at Fishers High School. The # 1 ranked Greyhounds will play the # 2 ranked Noblesville Millers in an all Hamilton County battle for the trophy at 4 PM on Saturday, November 2.
