The boys cross country team finished its schedule prior to the postseason tournament with a second place finish at Nike Valley Twilight . In a meet with increased competition for its second year of existence, the ‘Hounds finished 35 points behind York High School in Illinois in a battle of the two state’s most decorated programs historically. With 113 points, Carmel finished more than seventy points clear of all other Indiana schools, including many of the state’s best teams.
The frontrunning duo of freshman Kole Mathison and Grant Moon again led the way with times of 15:46 and 15:54, respectively, on a night when temperatures dropped to 65 after a week of record temperatures. After running in the lead pack for much of the race, Mathison finished eighth overall with Moon 14th.
The star of the meet may have been sophomore Charlie Schuman who patiently worked his way through a crowded field to finish 20th in a PR of 15:59. Senior Austin Throckmorton continued his season of solid contributions by running 16:11, and senior Will Murphy rounded out the scoring in 16:18 in just his second race of the season.
Like in the varsity, the ‘Hounds moved up through the race in the JV competition, eventually dominating the team score with just 22 points. The trio of junior Will Anderson, senior Sam Hooton and senior Nick Schuster finished 5-6-7 within two seconds of each other with junior Nate Seketa ninth and junior Bing Hudson in 13th overall. Many of those finishing further up in the results were not on scoring teams, thus the low score of 22.
